Three Things to Consider When Choosing a Real Estate Agent

When you’re searching for a new home or preparing to sell your existing property, it is important that you work with a real estate professional. While you can try to buy or sell a home on your own, doing so can be incredibly challenging.

An experienced realtor will be able to help you navigate the entire buying or selling process. They will also ensure that you get a great deal and eliminate much of the stress traditionally associated with real estate transactions.

With that being said, not all realtors are created equal. Before you put your trust in a real estate professional, you should make sure that they are the right fit for your specific needs.

Here are some tips and tricks to vet your prospective agent!

1.   Reputation and Experience

When you’re selecting a realtor, consider their reputation. Do they come highly recommended by friends and family? Is their website or social media page filled with dozens of positive reviews and client feedback?

If so, they will probably provide high-quality customer service. While you can look past one or two negative reviews, be aware of negative trends that have been reported by previous clients. This may include things like communication issues, paperwork errors, and similar concerns.

In addition to reputation, you should seek out real estate professionals that have plenty of experience. Specifically, look for an agent that has closed multiple deals in your region. These individuals will have a strong understanding of the local market and will be better equipped to assist you in finding your perfect property.

2.   Availability

When you’re searching for a real estate professional to partner with, make sure to ask about their availability. While it is not uncommon for realtors to be quite busy, it is important to find one that has the time to work around your schedule.

A realtor with high availability may not be able to accommodate every showing request. However, they should have the flexibility to schedule a showing or respond to your contact attempts in a timely manner.

At a minimum, you should be able to get a hold of your realtor during normal business hours.

Great real estate professionals go above and beyond to make deals happen. They also make time to accommodate their valued clients. This means treating you with respect, responding to inquiries, and taking other steps to streamline the buying or selling process.

3.   Communication Skills

Lastly, you should look for a real estate professional that has superb communication skills. The best agents will keep you apprised of the latest developments involving your home. They will never “go dark” for days on end. Instead, they should always keep you in the loop, even if nothing new has happened on the transaction.

Realtors need to be able to communicate well with everyone, not just you. They should be able to negotiate with other agents or homeowners and should have connections throughout the mortgage industry.

If an agent has a strong network of inspectors, repairmen, and financiers that they work with on a regular basis, this is a sign of strong communication skills.

By assessing realtors using the above criteria, you can identify the professional that will maintain clear lines of communication with you throughout the buying or selling process. If you have trouble reaching your agent during the first few days of interaction, then it may be time to continue your search!
